Safe and Gentle
The Bowen Technique is a very safe and gentle hands-on release therapy, working
on the soft tissue in the body by using gentle rolling movements over
particular points using the fingers and thumbs. The term soft tissue refers to muscles,
ligaments,
tendons, fascia, etc rather than bones (hard tissue). Often
soft tissue injuries are some of the most chronically painful and difficult to treat
because
of the difficulty to see what is going on under the skin with soft connective
tissues, fascia, joints, muscles and tendons.
Rolling Movements
The technique entails a series of moves which can be performed through light clothing.
The therapist creates rolling movements over specific
muscles, tendons and ligaments causing a stimulation through the connective
tissue to the surrounding area.
Stimulation
The nervous system is also stimulated, improving circulation and
encouraging
lymphatic drainage. The pressure used is very gentle yet very precise. There is
no prolonged or painful pressure involved although some areas may be tender when
first treated.
There is no manipulation of bones or constant massaging - making Bowen very different from other forms of therapy such as massage, physiotherapy,
chiropracticy or osteopathy.
A Holistic Therapy
Bowen therapy addresses the whole person and not just the presenting condition. It triggers the body to do its own healing, resulting in
more lasting effects. Clients usually respond very quickly to treatment,
noticing positive effects after the first treatment.
For most clients 3-4 treatments are recommended with a week between each visit.
